KOLKATA — Visual enhancements transformed the skyline above the Hooghly River after port authorities debuted a Rs 22.35 crore architectural lighting network across Rabindra Setu, widely recognised as the ‘Howrah Bridge’.

Overseen by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata, the new setup deploys 3,825 luminaires drawing 385 kilowatts. The installation highlights the bridge’s central pylons, upper crowns, and steel frame using dynamic color sequences coordinated with audio tracks.

The audio-visual programming will run during major national observances and regional festivities, including Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Durga Puja, Diwali, and Holi, an official release stated. Spectators can also stream the synchronised light and sound performances live via a dedicated mobile app.

SMP, Kolkata, serves as the administrative authority for the historic bridge under the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

“The illumination of Rabindra Setu is not just lighting of a bridge, it is lighting up the legacy of Kolkata,” said Rathendra Raman, chairman of SMP, Kolkata. “Howrah Bridge is an emotion for the people of this city and the nation. This dynamic architectural lighting will enhance its heritage grandeur and offer a world-class visual spectacle to citizens and tourists alike, while reaffirming SMP Kolkata’s commitment to preserving and celebrating our iconic heritage.”
