KOLKATA — West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari described the city’s hotel fire as a consequence of infrastructural negligence, pointing directly to a legacy of unchecked development that bypassed mandatory safety norms.
“For years, the City’s & State’s (stated in capitals) infrastructure was allowed to grow unchecked, with structures being permitted to be built and operate as hotels and other businesses while completely ignoring mandatory fire safety norms,” the chief minister mentioned in a post on X.
Adhikari stated that a five-member special investigation team has been formed to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.
Additionally, the administration has been instructed to ensure that all injured victims receive the best possible medical care and support, he added.
The tragic blaze broke out early Wednesday morning at a building on Mirza Ghalib Street. The incident claimed nine lives.
