KOLKATA / (NEW DELHI) — Indian Railways completed a 40-wagon freight shipment carrying canola from Kolkata Port directly to the Biratnagar customs yard in Nepal, initiating a new phase in cross-border logistics under updated bilateral transit terms.

The trial of the newly operationalised transit protocol allows containerised cargo to bypass border transshipment.

This direct route stems from a November 2025 Letter of Exchange that modified the existing transit framework. It leverages the broad-gauge connection between Jogbani, India, and Biratnagar, Nepal, which was established through a joint governmental inauguration in June 2023.
