KOLKATA — West Bengal has recorded the country’s highest digital self-enumeration tally for Census 2027, with more than 53 lakh households completing the initial online phase before the commencement of the door-to-door house listing exercise on August 16.
Director of Census Operations for West Bengal, Nikhil Pawan Kalyan, announced the milestone during a media briefing in Kolkata on Monday. He noted that nearly one-fourth of the state’s estimated households participated in the digital self-enumeration window, achieving a completion rate of roughly 93 percent among respondents.
Following the conclusion of the preliminary digital phase, field enumerators began visiting residential buildings and commercial establishments across districts to verify data and survey households that did not use the online portal. The house listing phase will run through September 14.
Residents who missed the digital window need not worry, Kalyan added, as field workers will record their details during the ongoing physical survey. A dedicated toll-free helpline, number 1855, has been set up to assist citizens, alongside an official enumerator sticker mechanism to help households identify authorised personnel.
The Census 2027 exercise relies on a specialised mobile application capable of operating offline, allowing field officers to capture and subsequently synchronise demographic data even in areas with limited internet connectivity. Commercial units are also being surveyed using a separate tailored questionnaire to ensure complete demographic coverage.
